Is it possible to apply an AGC filter to audio when playing video under linux?

AGC (automatic gain control) is needed for home viewing so that gunshots and explosions do not frighten neighbors, while quiet dialogues remain well legible and every rustle in silence sounds distinct.
Interested in any solutions, but primarily under mplayer or vlc.

When playing _any_ video - no. Neither Windows nor Linux have yet invented a button that could replace the sound engineer.
Nevertheless, you can more or less tighten the dynamic range that borders on marriage and normalize the sound, for example, using the dynaudnorm filter for ffmpeg. Some of the director's "ideas" will be lost, but as I understand it, you have problems with these ideas and you want to get rid of them.
