Is it possible to get by with the basics of JS in order to perform the tasks necessary for development?

If the knowledge you voiced allows you to solve the tasks you intend, the answer is yes . Otherwise, the answer will be apparently negative.

jQuery is just a library to make things easier that you can implement in pure JS.
