Installing Linux without data loss?

At the moment, I use win, on which there is almost 1t.b of the information I need. Goal: Install Linux Mint without touching the hard drive.
I found several articles on this subject, but everything is described superficially.

Buy a second drive, install Linux on it.

Disconnect physically the disks with the information you need. Install Axis, connect disks reversed
