Is it theoretically possible to install Linux or any other *nix system on a DVD set-top box for a TV? If so, what is the approximate process?

Using a crosscompiler, you compile the kernel according to the config for the processor of the set-top box, assemble the entire environment and the shell, pack the assembled into an image so that it fits on the flash drive of the set-top box
