What does lag mean? Have you tried saving for the web and compressing fine?
Other than png, other normal formats don't support transparency.
There is transparency in GIF, PNG, BMP, TIFF, JPEG 2000, while they will all be fatter than png, and the latter is not supported anywhere.

webp is also not supported everywhere
https://caniuse.com/#search=webp
It is also possible in svg, but if you have a complex picture there, then it is not an option.

Nothing is better than PNG.
For compression, I recommend the tinypng.com service.
You can also get an API there, and then screw it to Gulp to automatically compress all images when saving to a folder
