ImageMagic eats 500% CPU. What to do?

I will reformat 4 giga of photos (3000x2000 pixels). ImageMagic eats 500% CPU (All 5 cores of a powerful server at 100%). The hoster is sad and cuts off the script. It's just that php compresses photos with disgusting quality, that's why ImageMagic is what we use. Who faced what to do?
