If I start to remake projects in the form of an API?

Good afternoon!
I'll start with the fact that I have a few small projects (for myself), mostly data parsing from sites (PHP). This year, I started studying the Swift programming language and decided to start redoing projects in the form of an API so that I could use Swift as well.
In simple words: the backend is always in PHP, and on the front, for example, Swift, JS and maybe C ++
How correct will this decision be?

and what is the question?
if the goal is to provide any client with a single interface to data, then api is logical and natural.
if the task is to fumble the data, then any client can, for example, directly get into the database and pick up what he needs.
