Licenses for software and other works
Maxim K, 2020-10-29 18:12:56

I wrote a program - how to check that I do not violate the license?

Hello. Wrote a program using C# (Visual Studio), bass.dll + help on the forums, so to speak. I do not want to sell the software, but I would place it on my personal website. How do I know if I can host a program and if I can definitely put it on the web without violating any license agreements?

Freeware - the library is free for non-commercial use;
Shareware - a "shareware" license allows you to use BASS for commercial purposes with an unlimited number of shareware products, on one condition - the cost of the product cannot exceed €40 for each; suitable for individuals (not organizations);
Single commercial license - allows you to use BASS in only one commercial product;
Unlimited (unlimited) commercial license - allows you to use BASS in an unlimited number of commercial products.

There is only one way:

  • find those license agreements;
  • read them carefully;
  • understand the terms of the license;
  • evaluate whether your use complies with these terms.

Of course, there is a second way: pay someone who will do it for you.

You can post. Until you sell the program or it becomes too popular, no one will be interested in its licensed purity.
Because If you are using third-party components (BASS audio library), they are subject to the license specified by the authors of the component. It can also affect your code, you need to read the specific license.

BASS is free for non-commercial use. If you are a non-commercial entity (eg. an individual) and you are not making any money from your product (through sales, advertising, etc), then you can use BASS in it for free.

As long as you do not make money on your program, that is, you do not sell it, do not embed ads in it, do not use it in the organization's commercial activities, you can use bass.dll freely and free of charge.
By Visual Studio. If you use the Community version, then it is free for personal use, regardless of the purpose of development. The Professional and Enterprise editions can only be used with a paid subscription.
