I want to shoot video from 4 usb webcams and glue it into one widescreen on the fly, what tools or methods would you recommend?

Fisheye lens will not work, I’ll tell you in advance. The goal is to get a high-quality (without distortion) picture by merging video from /dev/video0-3 output to a file, or just to the screen.
PS Thank you in advance for your replies.

Previously, video was shot with FireWire (more professional, IEEE-1394) kino - still in the repositories. Maybe it will work in USB.
kdenlive - if you have acc. desktop graphic environment.
openshot , flowblade are also useful editors.
With regards to the device /dev/video0-3- google and search in the packages of your distribution for the keyword video4linux
