IT education

Humanities education is a sentence?

I came across a situation that made me think.
I have a higher psychological education (there was an interest in science, but as a science in psychology I was very disappointed).
Due to personal characteristics, I realized that I really like to work with my head and I can achieve greater success in a certain mode of work and with a minimum of contact with people. Compared to IT people, I always considered myself a second-class person. And now I decided that I can also master it, and programming fascinates more and more.
The situation was such that I was talking to one employer. He spoke for a long time about the fact that "papers about education" have no value. We discussed with him what their company does and who they need. Then I asked if the profile of higher education is important. After I announced that I had studied psychology, he immediately changed his face: "Girl, get married, I'm seriously telling you."
It made me think about how best I can proceed. That is, it turns out that when voicing my education, my candidacy is almost immediately discounted and you need to surprise the employer with your knowledge very much in order to get hired.
In connection with this question. Is it possible to "wash off" from a liberal arts education? What is the best way to act: to say that there is no higher, or at your own peril and risk to voice your own higher? What do you think?

The employer's response about getting married is just an unfortunate unethical joke.
In fact, the person tried to indicate that you do not fit specifically for open positions in this company, but instead of the straightforward “you do not suit us”, he released such a joke. It has nothing to do with the hopelessness of its development in the industry, in general.
No one is kicked out for having a psychological education. Usually, on the contrary, it is encouraged.
The problem is not the type of education. The problem is lack of experience. The company predicts that it is starting to fail to do certain things. She opens a vacancy for a specific position with specific tasks, expecting that the newcomer will be able to fill this gap. If a person does not know how to perform these tasks, he will not be able to offer anything to the employer, even if he has a higher education (regardless of the field).
Here's how to pass this threshold of entry:
First you need to decide what exactly you are drawn to in IT and what you would like to work with. Web development (and there - either the development and layout of frontends, or the development of the server part of the site, the "backend" that works with the database and incoming data from the frontend), or maintenance of servers, design and implementation of infrastructures, etc.
Then two possible ways:
- You yourself try to do what you are interested in at home on your PC. If everything works out, try again and again. Then you think about doing a small personal project on the topic, just something minimally useful for yourself (at least for the sake of experiment).
- You are applying for a vacancy marked "internship", where the requirements for applicants are low. If you are lucky, the tasks will be interesting and they will leave you with useful experience. You need to understand that the company spends its time and money on such employee training, so you should not expect large salaries at this stage. Also, do not expect that everything will be explained for you and constantly play the role of a teacher. A certain independence is still required.
This will allow you to gain experience and in the future to be useful in those vacancies where people are expected for specific technologies and tasks. By then, with some of them you will probably already have practice. =)

IMHO, it was not a "humanitarian" education, but in the field.
IT needs people with liberal education. IT is not only programming, but also a bunch of other related areas.
>What is the best thing to do: to say that there is no higher, or at your own peril and risk to voice your higher?
Talk like it is. Adequate people will respond adequately, and we don’t need the rest ...

I am a humanities programmer, for example. True, education is technical, but the mindset is the essence of the humanities. However, I feel pretty good on the web. You need to understand that this is not full-fledged programming as such, but web development, and you don’t have to calculate integrals here.
In general, you, as a certified psychologist, in theory, should know how to behave and present yourself so that your chances increase by a multiple. What to say in order to penetrate into the very soul, so to speak, to arouse sympathy, etc. You have a much better chance than non-psychologists. IMHO.

My suggestion: SCADA (for example, Indusoft (site indusoft.com, do not confuse with indusoft.ru)). All the girls I worked with liked to draw pictures. If you like the code, then - CoDeSys additives. There are 6 languages, it is enough to study CFC and ST. Also, many girls are designers (AutoCAD), but there is no need to write programs there.

Listen, what kind of psychologist are you, if everyone you meet and cross can immediately impose their opinion on you?
So the good news for you is that you don't have any humanitarian education.

At the institute they are taught to look for information to get their education.
So if you have learned this, you will find the knowledge of how to become a programmer.
IT is full of people who have achieved heights by being able to search for information without institutions.

I think a small portfolio with my achievements (a small information resource with examples of my research and achievements already in programming) would put such a joker on the subway. If not, then you still have to spend time getting some kind of programming crust. Another option is a certificate.

I can express my opinion.
In your question, you described a situation more based on feelings. You said that programming fascinates you. But no specifics.
Are you learning any programming language? What have you already achieved? What technologies have been mastered? What have you already tried? What did you talk about with the person?
Education is nothing, the mindset and the ability to lay out facts, causes, effects and, accordingly, logical chains between them, are the main thing.
There is nothing in your question that could give you an answer. There is only something general in your question, which allows you to give some kind of general answer for the average humanitarian. But not for you personally, because you can not measure the average temperature in the hospital.
It's easier to tell you exactly what you can't do.

The concept of liberal education is very broad. I studied at MSEI in the department of social work. And there were no problems with employment at all. It is clear that with an education in the field of psychology, you will not be taken to a design bureau)) You just need to look for a specialized job.
