How to work with zabbix correctly?

Good evening.
I immediately apologize for the noob question, but I really count on the help of the community.
There is a script that monitors a certain pipeline - the availability of the input and the correctness of the output (it does not climb into intermediate operations).
If an error occurs at one of these checkpoints, the people concerned should be notified.
Condition - you need to do it through zabbix.
That is, we catch an exception and pass some fail status via api, and zabbix does something in accordance with its policies - sends letters, sms, etc.
Actually the only problem is that I have no idea how to approach zabbix. I, in principle, understand how to configure internal monitors available in zabbix itself through item. But to make the monitor just get values from outside?
I would be very grateful if someone on the fingers will explain how zabbix works.
Thank you.

You can use a sender , you can use an agent, you can use any external script, SSH, whatever, zabbix is a very flexible monitoring system, specify the task, how does a person look at these checkpoints? What kind of program should be monitored, under which OS, and so on, it’s difficult to advise without specifics, but zabbix has an excellent wiki, start getting to know the system from it.
