How to work with VK API?

In general, a group of enthusiasts had a desire to create an application for their VK group. In fact, everything is on vk api, but there should be ratings and likes. So what's the best way to do this? With the posts, everything seems to be clear. A post comes from the client, we transfer it to VK, and then we write to our database. And what about the comments, how to do everything neatly? So far, it seems like this: a comment arrives from the client, we save it in vk, then we request a list of comments from vk, starting from the last one saved with us. Well in the answer accordingly we write to a DB, we give to the client. In general, I will be grateful for the help. I would not want to piss myself off and then realize that I was cheating because there is not enough experience.
