At this stage, my website folder consists of uncompressed images, fonts, and just compiled files via prepros. Is it necessary to use gallp?

If you want to optimize pictures, minify your files, then you need it, but there are other tools that use a GUI shell. The convenience of gulp is that you can write / download a config at a time and then all tasks will be executed one / pair of commands. Appreciate your time - use it.
