How to work with different branches (githab pages) on github?

To be honest, I haven’t worked with branches yet, but today, for the sake of interest, I created github pages and created a separate gh-pages with which I don’t know what to do :) Share your thoughts on how to handle it correctly.
And then after all, it should not contain the project itself, only, probably, public, or rather public itself, and should be this branch. But I don't even know what git is capable of, whether it can do this. Tell me how are you doing?
