How to validate a link?

Validation

The link can be anything, with or without http, with or without www. A third or second level domain, or a very long link with many get parameters. How to make the best validation for it? just by the presence of a dot? Seems simple. Without validation, it seems insecure.
Please suggest the best way to test.
I would also be glad to immediately get a regular season, I'm weak with them.
