How to use TDD when writing code?

I plan to create applications for generating reports, I plan to start a project using TDD. What literature can you recommend? I found a lot of examples when googling, but I don’t want to copy. I would like to understand the essence of the tool in order to understand when to use it, and when to avoid it. I will be very grateful.
