How to use city abbreviations in subdomains correctly?

Hello!
I am creating a site with multiple regions. There was a question about creating the correct URLs for subdomains: how would it be more correct to display the belonging to the city?
For example: "tol." or "tlt.", "mos" or "msk"
Does the name of the city in the URL matter for further promotion of the subdomain?

Better not cut. Example: naro-fominsk.beeline.ru/customers/products/

Is it worth it to downsize? Will it not turn out that you will then begin to come up with options for cities similar in name and get confused in your own abbreviations?
My opinion should not be reduced.
Look at other sites for examples. Look at Avito.

For search engines, all subdomains are all different sites and the only thing they will give to the main site is that there are links to the main site on other sites (subdomains). But if subdomains do not have any weight, then there is no sense from such subdomains. When creating a bunch of subdomains, you will need to promote each one as a separate site. It's better to do domain.com/city/[and then whatever you want]

As for me, it is better to abbreviate only large and well-known cities, for example, St. Petersburg, Moscow, Nn, etc.
Strong long urls are also not comme il faut
