How to use ajax in Joomla?

I'm learning how to create modules on Joomla3. I can't find in the documentation how to send a variable to php via ajax get and get it back. The problem is that simply writing the path to the php file does not work, I read the forums, I need to do something differently, but I didn’t figure it out.
