How to upgrade to the latest version of Unity and is it worth it?

In general, I have a rather old version of Unity - "Unity 5.3.4f1". And so I decided to update to the latest version, but as far as I understand, these updates are offered sequentially, i.e. I will need to download the next update from the one I have and so on. As I understand it, it's better to completely demolish this "Unity 5.3.4f1" and download the latest version from off. site?
But in that case, I have two questions: Should I even download the latest version of Unity? That is, are there any shortcomings, crashes, etc., since the current version is stable.
And the second question, those projects that were created on this version, will they run without problems on the latest version?

A newer version is definitely worth installing. Compared to the 5th branch in 2017 and 2018, there are a lot of interesting things.
As for the last one, I advise you to install the penultimate one with patches. Glitches in "super-fresh" versions, of varying degrees of intricacy, are not ruled out.
As for project support - no one except you knows what you have there in the project. I’ll say for sure that at the level of the unit code something was deprecating - it may be necessary to make changes. And so - basically everything should start.
Nobody bothers to put a new unit in parallel with the side and check-drive for several days.
