How to understand why Apache hangs?

Apache began to hang himself very often.
It takes a very long time to load everything. Long is more than 5 minutes already.
Have to reload.
But after reloading 2-3 page refresh and hangs again.
How to find the reason?

What does top show when Apache hangs?
It would also be nice to enable server-status for Apache and look at its internal state, especially after it starts to slow down.
