How to transfer data from one tab to another using google extensions?

Using google extensions, I want to transfer data from one tab to another (from site1 to site2, but the domains are different). localStorage does not help, because domains are different.
Tried chrome.tabs.query and chrome.tabs.create.
In which direction to dig?
ps For example, I want to transfer the title value from one site to another
