How to test a website using the Resource Timing API?

In my thesis, I need to analyze the performance of a website in different ways and reanalyze after each optimization step. The service is already ready for me, but as for testing, I have never been particularly fond of anything like that, I used all sorts of services to check the level of optimization, but no more. How to test a website using the Resource Timing API, since I looked at the documentation , but I still didn’t understand where to insert those scripts, where to look at the results (nothing is output to the console, it’s clear I’m inserting scripts somewhere), how to interpret them . If you can, tell me other good methods for testing performance (like firebug, or chrome devtools).
