How to temporarily get an American number to receive SMS?

Please tell me a service that could do the following (at least partially):
- temporarily allocate a phone number (s) (USA or Canada).
- could receive SMS.
- would have an API by which you can get the text of the incoming message.

clickatell seemed to be able to do this once.
I also received a US number in the HeyWire service (iOS, Android).

I used it a year ago - they gave us a number for free. Now it seems the same.
