How to take data for output to the WEB?

Good afternoon!
The software has a base where it writes the results (sqlite) and there is an XML API.
We want to make a web interface for software with chart commands and all that.
Where is it better to take data from and how will it be more productive, directly from the database or from the provided XML-based API?

Of course the API, giving direct access to the database is a big headache in the future.
