How to stop the bot from listening to messages?

Good afternoon. There is a bot that should store certain values in a variable when receiving messages. I use bot.on('message'... Then, when using some command, it gives an error: [polling_error] {}. Is it possible to somehow stop listening or not? Or should I use it differently
