How to step by step debug android app on phone through ubuntu terminal (no IDE)?

I found adb, but it doesn't seem to let you set breakpoints. Is it even possible? After all, Android Studio somehow installs them and allows you to view what is happening there.
I want it to be like with GDB for c++.
