How to start working remotely?

Good afternoon, I work as a system administrator in a small office, and I have a lot of free time, but the circumstances in my family are pushing me to look for additional income. I won’t find a better job in the city, and moving is not an option at all. So, I have an idea about Java C++. I am quite familiar with java, but I came across pluses at the university. From the web, I only know the basics of html and a little bit of layout. Tell me how to get into this freelancing or remote work of yours. I'm going to fix html + css + javascript for now and start writing on some popular framework. And what's next, which framework to choose? You can chew.

Register on freelance sites: freelansim.ru, fl.ru, upwork.com. And actively monitor new projects and respond. For the first time, while there is no portfolio, use dumping and try to cover as many orders as possible. In terms of work, focus on what you know best (java), there is no point in getting into the frontend, the competition there is just hellish at the initial levels.

Always an option.
Divorce your wife, leave your kids, take care of your parents.
Moralists will live "not very well" all their lives.

And what for from administrators to climb in programmers?
If you already have experience in administration, then pump this area.
Upgrade a couple of scripting languages and knowledge of the shell to the pluses.
Admins can work remotely earning very good money.
The main thing is experience and knowledge. With this, you seem to be at least at the initial stage, everything is in order.
Develop, upgrade, gain experience, find regular customers and ship money in bags! There are several acquaintances who started this way and work perfectly, they were admins, admins have remained, but they have only become admins with experience, with a capital letter, as they say. Develop. And do not forget about the near-administrative areas, all sorts of ciscos, networks, and all that, the English language - of course, go ahead and with a song!

I'll tell you how I started working:
I work as a .net programmer, I do the latest projects on webapi (backend) + angularjs (front).
I work full time, I leave home at 8 am and arrive home at 19.30 (working day from 10 to 18).
There was a very great zeal for freelancing, and one day I came across an article on Habré (now a megamind: megamozg.ru/post/6062). I liked the article and I decided to try, for about a week I made responses to all projects suitable for me by skills (3-4 responses per day) ... Somewhere in a week, a customer answered with a fixed price of $ 500 (I made a submission for 500 at that while the customer indicated no more than 900, and the Indians submitted on average 700). The task was simple enough, they had an application for photo recognition on winforms (or something like that), it was necessary to take the logs to the wcf service. We agreed and I started working, somewhere in a week I showed an intermediate result, everything was ok, but there were tedious problems in the implementation, they messed up their dll with recognition, etc. ... And I merged, said that I could not finish it and that the customer himself could decide how much to pay ... To my surprise, I received $ 250 for an unfinished work and a review of 4.65, they wrote that it was a good readable code, but I refused to complete the work... I withdrew money and scored on this acc (deleted it) and scored on freelance for about 6-8 months. Then the baby was born and I decided it was time! I signed up a new acc and started leaving feedback on projects again, and again about a week later I found a project, I had to do a test task angularjs + signalr + webapi, and so that the hubs in signalr checked authorization ([Authorize] attribute). Before the submission, I made a complete test task (I was interested in doing it myself) and in the submit I already sent the source code of the test task, but I do not advise you to do this. A day later, this customer contacted me, asked me to add something and accepted the job. I submitted again less than everyone else (the customer put up no more than 300 bucks, I submitted 100 when the average was 200). 2 days later I was paid my 100 bucks and the dude knocked on Skype. As a result: after my main job, I come home and have been working with him for the third month already, we agreed to pay through paypal (not directly through upwork), my rate is not high 22.5$/h. I worked more than 100 hours for it, I work 12-17 hours a week. Sometimes I seriously think about quitting my main job and going freelance full-time, since in freelancing I will obviously earn more. Only one thing stops, quit a stable income and leave ... There is a mortgage and so far it's scary =)
Z.S. as my experience has shown, absolutely anyone on upwork can knock out a job, you can get part of the payment even in cases of scam, if the work was done in good faith, the main thing is perseverance and making reviews and taking into account the points that are described in the article on the hub (megamind) ... Good luck to you in your endeavors, the main thing is perseverance and everything will work out.

See the "Find a question, answer, tag or user" field at the top? If you have a lot of free time, you can use it and look for answers to your question.

It is easier and faster for a system administrator to master and deal with the back-end if you really want to work in the field of web technologies. Front-end is a very vast area, it seems to me that it will be difficult to keep everything in my head. Moreover, it is not enough to study languages and frameworks, this area is now rapidly developing and it is necessary to develop along with it, i.e. "run" to "stay in place" :)

It is better to start working remotely than freelancing. These are different things. Vacancies regularly appear here, there is a mailing list: https://moikrug.ru/vacancies
Remote vacancies can also be found on popular freelance sites

Try working from home on your current project first. Agree with the employer, say for a day or a week. See what happens. If there are difficulties, analyze and correct. Not everyone can work remotely. When you feel that you are able to take a project on your own and complete it - find and work on a couple of projects on exchanges or find remote orders somewhere else. If everything goes well, you can start working in earnest. I wrote a lot on the toaster on this topic - you can see my posts in the profile.

It's very easy to get started - just pick up and start :) I think your question boils down to where to look for projects/orders/clients. Look for freelance exchanges. There are really a lot of them and to find something of your own, you have to try.
If you take on this, I strongly advise you to immediately buy a premium account on the exchange you choose. Nothing really works without PA. In addition to the fact that normal projects for basic accounts, as a rule, are not published, it should be borne in mind that customers are also distrustful of them.
If you are an admin, do administration. I do not advise you to climb into the layout. It is not as easy as it seems and you will have to spend a lot of time to reach a good level.

What is your profile as a sysadmin? I'm just as far as I know, there you can find tasks for the administrator, if you can configure servers remotely.
