I do not want to immediately start with hacks - I would like to understand exactly how it was conceived by the authors of CMS.

In general, I myself will answer my own question. Maybe for someone it was obvious, but I did not understand right away. In the admin panel, you must first go to Components -> Image Upload, open the "Large" preset (or some other) for editing, enable the watermark overlay and upload it. We save. Next, go to Components -> Photo Albums and select the preset for which we uploaded a watermark. All. After uploading photos to the photo album, you can see the result.
