Site1 has a gif banner that links to site2. Site2 has metrics and analytics installed, but none of the statistics show that the referral source is site1.
Instead, the transition is rendered as a straight line. How to customize source display?

Perhaps the transition is performed by "cunning" js code, and not a simple link transition. In a number of cases, referrer may not be fixed after transition using JS ( an example of a similar problem on SO ).
If it is not possible to change the transition method, you can bypass the problem "sideways" by substituting a special utm-label in the link for the transition, and you can already navigate in the statistics by it. Today, this is a fairly standard approach.
