How to set up mail on vps without installing extra software (for example, ISPmanager)?
You just need the mail function to work. No alternatives are needed.
Mail does not work, does not even send to a temporary mailbox.

install sendmail, specify in php.ini php.net/manual/ru/mail.configuration.php#ini.sendm... , set spf for the domain (from where it is sent), generate keys and connect DKIM (by installing open-dkim) to sign letters.
