How to set media queries correctly?

Experienced, please tell me how you put media queries?
I know how it works and how to write them, but I still can’t understand what screen resolutions I need to set the next media query.

I shrink the browser window, then look at what happened (yeah, something went wrong or looks ugly) and write a media query with max-width equal to this screen resolution.

I just get quite a lot of them, something like 6-10 pieces per project. Although I looked on the Internet there people write 4-6.
Maybe just squeeze more so that it captures several screen resolutions at once?
