How to select nodes with a pipette?

Yesterday I took the Eyedropper (I) and by pressing CTRL (CMD) selected the grid nodes. Today I'm trying to do the same, instead the entire figure is selected. How to select separate points with a planted control?

first switch to direct selection tool(A) and only then to eyedropper(I)
