How to see the network card in Gent?

built genkernel kernel started with gent installed, no internet, write ifconfig answers

TX errors 0 dropped 0 overruns 0 carrier 0 collisions 0
if loaded from livecd, i.e. eth0, tried to execute net-setup lo writes that there is no such utility, i.e. you need to install net-setup . What to do?
