How to save state in linux?

Hello, I have 2 OS installed on my machine, linux and windows respectively.
I am working under linux and need to "run back" to windows but I want to save the state i.e. all work, all running and open files, then reboot and select windows through grub.
When I boot into linux again, I would like to see where I left off.
How and by what means can this be implemented?

@Spetros

Use hibernation (sleep mode).
But before that, windows disks need to be unmounted (if they were used).

If your computer resources allow you to run linux through virtualbox(vmware) and work in parallel.
In virtualbox, it is possible to turn off the stateful virtual machine.
In vmware, it is possible to start the system from a physical disk without creating a virtual one.
