How to remove lag when displaying a large table?

A table with 6 columns and 2000+ rows is displayed on the page.
Now when the table has 1300 rows in safari, the page is rendered in chunks when scrolling, but in chrome it just lags when scrolling. On a non-weak computer under windows, it lags even worse.
And what will happen when there are 2000+ entries on the page.
What could be the reasons for the lag? Or is there nothing to be done here?
