Do you want Ubuntu to BOOT over the network?
If so, then it is necessary that the kernel (or initdr) be booted via PXE, and all volumes, including the root one, should be mounted via NFS.
How exactly to do this, I myself would like to know, but I think that it will work extremely slowly (imagine a system with a hard disk at a speed of 6MB / sec).
