How to read information from the LCD display (like a calculator)?

There is a device, it has an LCD display, like a conventional calculator. The task is to read information from it periodically and transfer it to a computer.
With reading / transmission - I’ll do it on arduino, but which sensor should I use to determine if the display segment is on or not?
The device is unique in its kind, and it is forbidden to disassemble it in order to connect to the contacts, although even if you manage to connect, it’s not a fact that it will be easier than reading from the screen ....

This is a crazy decision, but what Roman Kulakovich suggests is the only possible option. In addition, if there are only the same type of numbers, OCR will be primitive.
