How to put a guide on selected text?

I'm going through layout lessons, they describe the following way of measuring the distance from the block to the text: select the text, put a guide, measure the distance to it.

But when I select text and try to put a guide, the text selection disappears and I can’t put the guide itself. Only after the selection disappears, it becomes possible to put it.
What to do in this case?

with the selected text, hold down control or CMD if poppy and pull the guide where you need
it, you can even move the text or do something else. In short, this is shorthand for temporarily activating the move tool.
