How to properly work with GIT on a local server?

We are working with a partner on the site, because it is inconvenient to work on a hosting, synchronization with the server is very long. We decided to move to a local server, but we need to work together. We want to use Git, will it work like this? If the site is uploaded to github, how to avoid problems with the database?

Can Docker be suitable for this? Look at this tool, if I'm not mistaken, it's just for these purposes. I haven’t used Docker myself yet, I can’t specifically help, but look like this is the same case.
