How to properly use the article tag and BEM rules?

What type of BEM web page component can be assigned to the article tag? article in the spec is a standalone tag that can be used multiple times on pages without dependencies. Do I understand correctly that under no circumstances can it be an element according to BEM?

There are semantics. There is BEM. The same article could be inside an article, where it would already be an element. Do not become a slave to BEM, it was invented to simplify life, and not vice versa;)
