How to properly use a GitHub repository?

Hello friends, I have seen GitHub many times before, but never understood its exact purpose. But it's not that. This is also free hosting. And now I have a question... wouldn't it be embarrassing to write some personal Landing Page and place it on the GitHub repository, I don't want to buy a server... since I don't have any money now. To whom this question seems stupid, do not be very indignant ... this is the first time I have encountered this .. and I want to know if it is possible to do this .. and whether people do this at all.

Not just a repository + index.html.
The repository must have a specific name: your_nickname.github.io

That's what free hosting is for. using github as hosting is a perversion in my opinion.
