How to properly edit Opencart files?

Good day. This article describes how to display contacts in the header. And in the first step they write it is necessary to make changes to the /catalog/controller/common/header.php file, but is it right to do this? After updating the engine, won't everything fly off?

Ideally, everything is done through add-ons. But due to the large amount of work, many rule directly - it's easier and faster. Which makes updates difficult.

It can fly off if it was written there, for example <?php echo $contacts ;?> and you write <?php echo $contacts
Editing engine files is not something wrong, just unsafe. OpenCart has its own version of vqmod called ocmod. If you use it, then the risks are less.
