How to properly backup VirtualBox virtual machines?

How to properly backup VirtualBox virtual machines?
Is it possible to copy files of working machines without stopping them?

Or it is necessary to stop at first, and then to copy?
Or do a snapshot and then put it on disk?

Can anyone recommend a script or software?

How to properly backup VirtualBox virtual machines?

I don't know how to do it right, but I completely stopped the car and made an offline backup. For many years there were no problems during the restoration. There were nuances with domain machines, but this is not a VirtualBox issue.
I wrote a regular cmd script (slowed down the VM, copied the VM, started the VM, compressed the copy with the archiver)
This turned out to be the best option in terms of time.

Can you share the script?

If you do not want to invent a script - I wrote such a program for Windows. You can throw it into the task scheduler, and specify the necessary virtual machines in the settings file, from where to copy, how many copies to store.

I use it on my home server.
