xDebug is very powerful, can it be used on production systems (it's heavy)? What tools are there to profile PHP applications in real time and without sacrificing website speed?

xhprof . Created by Facebook. Just for the purposes of work on production'ah. Supports a special flickering mode to save resources when collecting statistics. There are tabular and graphic reports.

We use newrelic.com. True, if you are interested in some specific sections of statistics, then you will have to make changes to the project code.
