How to play sound from different apps on different devices at the same time?

I want to listen to music on my laptop and watch a movie on TV at the same time. If it is possible to switch all sound output either to the TV or to the laptop speakers, should it be possible to switch selectively? vlc to a TV via hdmi and rhythmbox to laptop speakers, for example?
OS - Ubuntu 12.04 x86_64
Laptop HP Probook 4530s
