How to organize access from the site to the home server?

Hello. Need help with the following problem. There is a website hosted on the Internet with an attached domain, there is a home server with Ubuntu Server 14.04.1 on board and a 3TB hard drive (RAID array will be organized in the future). The task is to organize access to data on the home server from the site.
My ideas:
1. Install a web server on a home server and expand it to the Internet, for access via an external ip.
Already implemented this using denwer on windows. I made a request from the site to a script that scanned the directory on the home web server. But, something tells me that this method is extremely unsafe.
2. Access via OpenVPN.
I had no work experience, I know what is widely used in corporate networks for secure access, I would like to hear a competent opinion, what features are needed on hosting and is OpenVPN generally suitable for solving my problem?
3. Transfer the entire site from the hosting to the home server.
The downside is that then you will need to keep the home server turned on all the time for the site itself to work. For my task, round-the-clock access to data on the home server is not yet needed.
