How to organize a home file server from a laptop on Linux?

There are two laptops - small and large. Small fast, with a backlit mechanical keyboard. The big one is slightly slower, but with 2 TB of space on board - and this place needs regular access via LAN / Internet . At the moment, I get this access simply: on a large win10 prof, I connect to it via rdp from a small one either via Wi-Fi or via a LAN cable directly (depending on what data transfer rate is needed). I would like to:

1. Replace on a large win10 prof with Linux. There are other plans for the win10 pro license.
2. Refuse RDP. On that same 2 TB screw, there is an exceptionally large file washer, which needs access from another machine, and access from an android is already needed. By itself, the large desktop is not used.

Question: how beautifully to implement these tasks?

All health and well-being, guys!

  1. Finally, get a modern router on the network.
  2. Connect a large laptop to the router with a cable (gigabit, if supported by the router and laptop).
  3. You can install Ubuntu on a large laptop or whatever is more familiar, you can use a server one, but it doesn’t matter. Still, his display is intact, after all, why deprive yourself of an extra spare desktop? You can connect to a TV set via HDMI, you get a cool media player.
  4. Bring another cable from the router, in case you need to throw something big, but the Wi-Fi does not give the desired speed.
  5. On a large laptop in separate containers, raise samba, dlna, a torrent downloader with a web interface, register ssh keys to enter on occasion.
