How to optimize the stl format model?

There are models in stl format, there is a task to make a beautiful render in 3dmax, large-volume models, for example, the max does not tear off from 7 meters, it freezes at the welding stage. Maybe there is some editor that understands stl better and can convert them to 3ds for example or obj?
