How to open a window with a hidden dock icon?

How can I show the application window, but without its icon appearing in the dock? This is how the dropbox settings window works, for example - the settings window appears, but no icons appear in the dock. Does anyone know how this is done?

this behavior is common for applications that live only in the menu bar.
this is usually achieved by adding an LSUIElement key with a value of true to Info.plist .
