How to monitor RTSP stream from IP camera?

I was puzzled by the question of how to track the fall of the rtsp stream from the video camera and restart FFMPEG after recovery. The main problem with FFMPEG is that the process hangs. Now NGINX is installed on Ubuntu, it takes a stream from RTSP, issues RTMP and HLS through the NGINX-RTMP module. On the net, I came across a script that monitors the presence of HLS playlists and, if absent, restarts the corresponding ffmpeg process. But it doesn't work. Who solved this problem? Are there any ways to monitor the incoming data in RTMP?
